Flextronics, Aerotek Team with Memphis Campus on Summer Jobs Program for Computer and Electronics Students

Remington College, Flextronics, and Aerotek (the Flextronics staffing agency) have been working together on a Summer Jobs Program for college students that is proving to be mutually beneficial for Flextronics, Remington College, and our Computer and Network Administration (CNA) and Electronics and Computer Technology (ECT) degree students at the Memphis Campus.

Who Is Flextronics?
Flextronics is a globally recognized Fortune 500 company that designs, builds, ships, and services electronic products for customers all over the world. These products include PC desktops, laptops, robotics, wireless routers, medical diagnostic equipment, and more.

What Is the Flextronics Summer Jobs Program?
The Flextronics Summer Jobs Program is similar to a summer internship in that students are compensated for hours worked.* Memphis Career Services Representative Angela Poole cultivated the relationship with Flextronics to make this program happen.

Initial Group of Remington College – Memphis Students
The initiative began with a week-long orientation session for our first group of nine Memphis Campus participants on March 1 through March 5, 2012. Flextronics Trainers Shana Winston and Chris Reynolds worked with the following students as part of the initial class:

  • Christina Brown
  • Tommy Brown
  • Eric Hall
  • Courtney Marks
  • Lee Mays
  • Richard Mercer
  • Bionca Norris
  • Leonta Suggs
  • Zavian Withers

Memphis Career Services Representative Joseph “C.J.” Harris reports that all nine students did very well. The second session of CNA and ECT students began on April 16. This summer jobs program is tentatively scheduled to run through September.

How the Summer Jobs Program Recruiting and Training Process Works

Some members of the initial Flextronics internship class, supervised by a trainer.

Remington College personnel identify a group of student participants who have basic computer knowledge. A one-hour orientation session is conducted for those students by Aerotek and Flextronics at Remington College in Memphis.

Job training is then conducted at our Memphis Campus by Flextronics trainers. The training generally lasts 32 hours over a two-week period, approximately four hours a day for four days a week (in the afternoons).

The training focuses on how to disassemble and assemble laptop computers, as the job requirement for the summer program includes disassembly and assembly of laptop computers and repair-related data input into the Flextronics Shop Floor Database System.

Following the training, Flextronics makes its hiring recommendations to Aerotek. Aerotek processes the required paperwork to conduct background checks and drug screenings and then extends offers and places the successful candidates on their payroll.*

The selected candidates are required to work a minimum of six hours per day. Their work schedule is Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. They are also asked to be available for Saturday work if required.

Flextronics Sr. Environmental Health and Safety Engineer and Safety Manager Blanchard Winbush recently sent a note to C.J. Harris expressing his thanks and commenting on the jobs program thus far: “We at Flextronics wanted to say thanks to you and your Career Services team for all of your help with the Summer Jobs Program. The second group of students started this week (April 16), so I stopped by and welcomed them aboard. They all seemed excited and enthusiastic. We are really pleased to have so many Remington students here at Flextronics, and we look forward to our continuing partnership.”
