Every day at Remington College – Fort Worth Campus is a great day, but Tuesday, April 24, 2012, was better than most.
First, our students and faculty gave of their time and of themselves during a Campus blood drive, which resulted in a total of 141 donors and 92 units of blood drawn. An impressive 276 lives were saved/touched due to those efforts.
To commemorate this fine turnout, students and faculty were rewarded with a great concert by the singer AJ Green, spokesperson for our 3 Lives Campaign. AJ has had the honor of singing for Jennifer Hudson, Elton John, former President Clinton, and President Obama, among others.
AJ lives in Las Vegas, and when he is not traveling, he attends college and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Music Education. His father, Mr. Tony, is his “roadie,” sound technician, supporter, and caregiver, because AJ not only has the challenge of being a student and representing the Carter Foundation but also deals with the debilitating and painful effects of sickle cell anemia.
Sickle cell anemia is a disease that strikes persons of African-American heritage. This disease is responsible for the 100 blood transfusions AJ has had thus far in his 19 years of life. One of the greatest challenges he has in traveling is that he never knows when an attack will occur, resulting in great pain and fatigue.
AJ Green Concert at Fort Worth College
The concert at our Fort Worth Campus was fantastic and attended by a full house. Two of the songs AJ sang are original compositions: “ Surrounded by Daylight” and “Closer to You.” Both are available, along with his other recordings, on iTunes® and Amazon®. At the end of the concert, he received a well-deserved standing ovation.
AJ was asked what his greatest joy has been during the past two years. Although he has had many, he says that meeting other people and singing for them makes him happy and helps him to forget his own troubles and physical pain.
AJ’s take-away lesson is: “Keep running the race. Have tunnel vision or single-mindedness regarding your goals, and let nothing keep you from achieving them.” He can be reached on Facebook or Twitter at @AJwhateveruneed.
