A fun and fabulous fashion show, themed “Under the Sea,” was held recently at the Paul Brown Institute at Remington College in Honolulu.
Staged by Cosmetology seniors, the entertaining event provided a venue for our students to showcase their skills with make-up and hair. Students worked as cosmetologists and models/presenters for a very appreciative audience, which included Paul Brown himself.
Barbara Takeuchi is the Director of the Paul Brown Institute at Remington College. She said, “The fashion show is very motivating for students – it lets them get creative and lets them see the ‘wow factor’ in what they’re learning.”
She added, “Our plan is to stage events like this one every module (which is every four weeks), or every couple of modules, because it does require a lot of planning and preparation.”
Honolulu Cosmetology School Graduate Recalls Remington College Experience
Paul Brown graduate and Honolulu Cosmetology program valedictorian Kali Cho has been working at Paul Brown’s Kailua Salon since December 2011.
About her time at Remington College, Kali said, “It was a really good experience. I made some really good friends, and some now actually work with me. It’s nice to be able to work with friends that you went to school with.” She noted that Remington College’s program, which includes opportunities to work with actual clients hands-on in a salon environment, “prepares you for what you’re going to experience in a real-life salon.”
Paul Brown Representative Comments on Cosmetology Program at Remington
Angela Howard, Managing Director of the Paul Brown Hawaii salons, said, “We love Remington. They’ve been really great. We created the curriculum, and they still use it…. I do find that Remington does put out a higher caliber of graduate, and we like that. We love that.”
Ms. Howard noted that Kali Cho will very shortly move from an entry-level Junior Stylist position to a Stylist position. This is after only about six months of employment at Paul Brown – testament to the quality of training received at Remington College.
Preparing Graduates for the Cosmetology Field in Honolulu
About the Cosmetology program in Honolulu, Ms. Takeuchi said, “All of my instructors here actually do have a background in hairstyling and spa facials, and they have a long history in the field. We encourage our people to build their portfolios from Day 1, so we start with mannequins always, and once they start working on clients or bringing in models, we always have them take pictures of the ‘befores’ and ‘afters.’ ”
She added that helping students to build both their portfolios and their résumés arms them with the skills, confidence, and support they need to pursue a career in the field.
