On August 25, 2012, the Criminal Justice Club at Remington College – Dallas Campus hosted its first annual Back-to-School Bash for local youth. Many local residents attended the event, held at Audubon Park, in Garland, Texas.

At the bash, families were treated to hot dogs, hamburgers, popcorn, face painting, and games such as ring toss and more.

The gathering was funded by a car wash hosted by club members prior to the event. The car wash was held at O’Reilly Auto Parts, also in Garland, and raised more than $325, with the donation matched by Remington College’s corporate office.

All proceeds went to purchase items listed on the Garland Independent School District’s Elementary School supply list, and the items were packaged by our Club members according to grade level and presented to the youth in attendance during the bash.

Other Criminal Justice Club Activities
“Our Club has been very busy with community events,” commented Criminal Justice Degree Program Instructor Catina Hightower. The club was established in January 2011 by Ms. Hightower to promote leadership and networking opportunities for its members.

Earlier in the year, club members collected teddy bears during a “Bear Hugs for Valentine’s Day” event, with the collected items going to patients at the Children’s Medical Center of Dallas.

The club also hosted its second annual Easter Egg Hunt at Audubon Park, during which children in attendance collected plastic eggs filled with candy and prize tickets good for a variety of prizes, including small and large Easter baskets, coloring books, activity books, Frisbees, and more.

Plans are moving forward to continue the club’s active participation in more upcoming community events. The club is also continuing its collaboration with the Volunteer Center of North Texas, which consists of more than 1,700 agencies offering volunteer opportunities with police departments, community service restitution centers, truancy courts, and the like.
