Remington College in Heathrow “Relays For Life” to Help Fight Cancer

Almost all of us have been touched by cancer in some way. So again this year, participants from Remington College’s home office in Heathrow, Florida, banded together to help in the fight for greater cancer awareness and prevention and for continued research to help end this devastating disease. Initially, they raised money by selling baked goods and collecting donations and later walked in the American Cancer Society (ACS) Relay For Life event, held on April 19, 2013, at the Sanford Zoo, in Sanford, Florida.

Bake Sale Kick-Off
The bake sale on April 17 at our home office in Heathrow (with sales continuing at the Relay) raised a total of about $250 toward the ACS cause. The delectable items for sale featured limeade and wedding cake cupcakes, lemon bars, cookies, muffins, brownies, cappuccino cupcakes, and more.

Admissions Support Manager Charmaine Barrant helped with the bake sale activities, along with Jennifer Dancesia and Erin King, who organized Admissions Support’s contributions, and Pam King and Melissa Rosa, who organized the Online team’s contributions. Ms. Barrant noted, “I am proud to see our Remington College teammates and coworkers involved in such a great cause.”

At the Sanford Relay
Two days after the bake sale, our Remington College home office team joined several groups from around Central Florida in the Relay For Life in Sanford, which raised $17,234 on the night of the relay alone – a record for the Sanford event.

The Relay theme for 2013 involved commemorating the holidays. Our Remington College team represented Thanksgiving, and our team name was the “Big Bad Turkeys (No Chickens Allowed)”!

The Relay began at 5 p.m. and ended 18 hours later, on Saturday. At the event, several team members camped out overnight and took turns walking around a track to raise money and awareness and help ACS in the world’s largest fight for more birthdays.

The event began with an opening ceremony, followed by a survivors’ lap during which cancer survivors walked to celebrate their victory over the disease. Then came the caregivers’ lap, in tribute to those who have given care to cancer patients. Next, all of the teams walked together during the Relay’s opening lap.

As night fell, luminary bags and candles were lit for a beautiful and moving Luminaria Ceremony to honor loved ones who have passed or are fighting the disease. Individual Relay team members then walked around the track throughout the night, as family games, activities, and entertainment were available for all.

The gathering closed on Saturday with a Fight Back Ceremony, during which the walkers took a final lap and renewed their pledge to spread awareness of cancer research, treatments, and prevention.

Overall, about 50 people from our home office participated in this fundraising and awareness-raising effort, from those who baked and bought items at the bake sale, to those who gave cash donations via the web, to those who donated supplies, and of course those who came out to the event on April 19.

We thank everyone for their time, energy, and contributions and look forward to next year’s Relay!
