Fort Worth Campus student Jessie Phillips, Jr., who is pursuing an associate’s degree in Digital Graphic Art, is the Campus’s first recipient of the President’s Volunteer Service Award for 2013.

According to its website (http://www.presidentialserviceawards.gov/), “The President’s Volunteer Service Award is the premier volunteer awards program, encouraging United States citizens or lawfully admitted permanent residents of the United States, through presidential recognition, to live a life of service.”

Jessie has two other associate’s degrees from Remington College in Fort Worth:

  • An Associate of Applied Science degree in Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology, earned in 2004.
  • An Associate of Applied Science degree in Computer Network Systems Technology, earned in 2006.

He has also served our country as a member of the United States Air Force.

Certificate, Pin, and Letter
Jessie was honored on July 9, 2013, in front of a group of his peers from the Digital Graphic Arts Department and members of the faculty and staff, prior to one of the Campus’s most important events of the year, the Digital Graphic Arts Portfolio Show.

On that day, Jessie received a certificate acknowledging his service, a commemorative lapel pin, and a letter from the President of the United States congratulating Jessie on his decision to give back to his community by donating 100 or more clock hours of volunteer time.

His honor, award, and photograph have also been commemorated on our Campus President’s Volunteer Service Award bulletin board, just outside the Student Center. Information about other students, faculty, and staff who are trying to achieve this goal is also displayed there, including:

  • Dental Assisting students Chasity Miller, Brandi Stone, Yaritza Yepez, Candace Guerro, LaCreshia Perkins, Madison Moore, and Susan Flores.
  • Learning System Resource Manager Dana Seelye.
  • Campus President Gregg Falcon.

Jessie’s Involvement with Special Olympics
Jessie has worked with his volunteer organization of choice, the Special Olympics, for more than 10 years. He began as a parent volunteer going to practices with his son. Having been a school athlete himself, it didn’t take long for Jessie to see that his desire to teach and coach could be useful to the organization. He said, “You just teach them what you know…. These folks want to achieve and learn; they just need someone to spend the time and energy with them.”

Since that time, Jessie has coached people ranging in age from 17 to 43 in just about every sport. He recounted the touching story of one young lady who loved to play baseball and declared at practice one day that she wanted to play well so that the Texas Rangers would send a scout to watch her play and offer her a job.

Jessie encourages all students to get involved in Special Olympics, noting that “You don’t have to coach. You can go to the area competition at the University of Texas at Arlington and referee or sell fundraising items to the spectators.”

Remington College encourages all of our students to follow Jessie’s example by volunteering in the community and living a life of service.
