During the April 2013 quarter, Lead Instructor John Williams invited TK Kelly to share his career highlights and perspectives with the Digital Graphic Art students at Fort Worth.

Mr. Kelly is the creative director at HBS Media, a branding and creative studio in Dallas, Texas. He has worked in the industry for more than 12 years, and his experience includes branding, graphic design, screen printing, print production, advertising, and promotional products.

His talk centered on portfolio presentations and what art directors and hiring managers are looking for in student portfolios. He focused on three key points for students to think about:

1.      Decide which kind of designer you want to be.

2.      Remember that presentation is everything.

3.      Get your portfolio in front of the right people.

His branding philosophy is simple: “If you fail to engage and connect with your target audience while you build your brand, then you’ll do damage to your brand. It doesn’t matter if that’s business or personal.” Some of his clients have included Domino’s Pizza, Rent-A-Center, Baskin-Robbins, Wendy’s, Pizza Hut, and Direct TV.

After speaking with students, Mr. Kelly shared a favorite quote by Norman Vincent Peale: “Believe in yourself. Have faith in your abilities. Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers, you cannot be successful – or happy.”

Student Reactions
DGA student Brittany Johnson and others in attendance thought Mr. Kelly’s presentation was enlightening and offered great advice about how to present oneself and how to highlight one’s strengths.

Students gained valuable insights from Mr. Kelly and appreciated his time on Campus, as they are always looking to expand their horizons and learn about the real-life experiences and career endeavors of people in the field.

The next time you’re out and about, look around you and take in the work of digital designers and graphic artists. See what catches your eye, whether it’s a billboard, a magazine cover, or even a restaurant menu. You’ll see how the work of graphic designers is all around you and really begin to understand the effect it has on your daily life.
