Tavia’s background, and how she worked toward achieving her goals:
“Before Remington, my life basically consisted of just working and working more. I had four jobs at one time: two were at sports bars, one was in a nightclub, and the other was at a retail store.  I never had a full day off unless I scheduled one in, which was usually only once a month.  This really took a toll on my mind and body, and I knew I didn’t want to live this way for the rest of my life.  I didn’t want to need four jobs to survive.

Then, I found out I was going to be a mom, which completely flipped my life around.  With the support of my boyfriend and family, I was able to quit all my jobs and become a stay-at-home mom.  Being a full-time mom was great; however, now that our income had been greatly reduced, we struggled to pay for everything that we needed in addition to everything a new baby needs.

I knew that I wanted more for my family, so I made the decision to go back to school, get an education, and get a career.  Going back to school with a child and attending online was harder than I thought it would be.  I mean I had four jobs at one time, so I thought I could do it all.  It was tough trying to be a new mom and a new student at the same time, but I had to remind myself that I needed to get it done for my family; otherwise, I had nothing else to offer.

Remington College has helped me in my success by providing me with the education I needed to get a job that can help me provide for my family and give me the time to be with them.  I no longer need four jobs!” (1)

Why Tavia chose Remington College and our online program:
“I chose Remington because I wanted to attend an accredited school(2) that had a physical campus in my area, the option to attend online, and the program that I was looking for. What made Remington different is that it offered everything I wanted in a school.

My favorite classes were definitely the accounting classes.  In addition, I was very inspired by my environmental science class.  I have made my family and my boyfriend’s family change their recycling habits to the point where we now have to use two recycle bins instead of one.  My family tends to tease me and my move to ‘save the planet,’ but at least they go along with what I say.

As for the online format, I really enjoyed it.  I liked that I had the freedom to attend class on my time and in the comfort of my home, or at the beach, along with being able to be with my kids.  Also, not having to commute to school every day saved on gas, money, and created less pollution for the planet.

Remington’s online program really gave me the opportunity to be the mom that I wanted to be and the chance to be the career woman I look forward to becoming.”(1)

What has changed for Tavia:
“After I graduated from Remington, my life and my family’s life have completely changed.  Since I have a job now, my family has to adjust to daily life without me, such as making meals, getting the kids ready, and other mom duties.  It’s interesting to see how many people it takes to do my old duties.

While I’m still new at my job, I feel that I am doing very well so far.  I’m becoming responsible for more and more duties and learning more things every day.

I think the skills that I learned from Remington have helped me progress easily at my job, even though I had no experience in the accounting industry.

My plans for the future are to focus on my job for at least a year, save some money, and start working toward getting my CPA.” (1)

How Tavia worked with our Online and Honolulu Campus to find employment:
“I feel that both the Online and Honolulu Campus members were great in helping me find employment.  I got a lot of great advice, was given many leads for where I could apply, and even got a résumé makeover.  I’ve met quite a few members who had a hand in getting me closer to employment, but in particular, Paolo Dela Cruz was very kind and helpful in telling me what I should know when applying for a certain job, how to be prepared for an interview — and he even helped me revise my résumé, which I believe is what helped me get hired.” (1)

Our congratulations and best wishes to Tavia as she embarks on her new career! (1)
