On Friday, April 11, 2014, Little Rock Director of Career Services Laura McNeel served as a volunteer judge at the 52nd annual Arkansas Phi Beta Lambda State Leadership Conference, held in North Little Rock, Arkansas, at the Wyndham Riverfront Hotel.

Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) is an educational association of students preparing for careers in business and business-related fields and is the college wing of the Future Business Leaders of America organization. PBL’s mission is to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career-development programs.

During the Arkansas leadership conference, more than 300 students from 15 post-secondary institutions across the state competed in more than 60 events. Many events required students to perform in front of a panel of judges from a variety of corporate backgrounds.

Ms. McNeel was part of a four-member panel who initially reviewed students’ competency in completing an employment application, writing a cover letter, and developing a résumé. During the conference, Ms. McNeel and the other members of her panel interviewed students one at a time to assess their proficiency during a mock job interview process.

Ms. McNeel said, “This was my fifth consecutive year as a participant, and I always enjoy my experience there each year. It’s a wonderful opportunity to help students build their skills and confidence as they engage in preparing for an interview and in the interview process itself.”(1)

In addition to the competition, students had the opportunity to tour different businesses and industries, such as the Arkansas Children’s Hospital and Acxiom Corporation. The two-day event provided networking opportunities and helped students in attendance develop valuable leadership skills that they can take with them into their professional careers.(1)

Arkansas PBL Adviser Sandon Williams recently said, “We thank the diverse and qualified judges who volunteered their time in making this year’s State Leadership Conference successful.”

Competitors from the Arkansas PBL Leadership Conference who advance to the National PBL Leadership Conference will compete against the best and brightest aspiring business professionals in the country on June 24 through 27, 2014, in Nashville, Tennessee.
