Our enthusiastic, talented Cosmetology I and II students at the Tampa Campus got a great chance to give something back while building their expertise at the SISTUHS Fifth Annual Women’s Retreat. The event was held at TECO Conference Hall, on the University of South Florida (USF) Campus in Tampa, on June 14, 2014, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Our Cosmetology students provided polish changes, hand massages, and curling-iron styles to those in attendance at this free event.

The goal of the wellness and spiritual gathering was to embrace better, healthier living. The event included speakers on many health and wellness topics such as exercise regimens, cancer survival and preventive measures, and much more. Several vendors also attended, offering products like herbal remedies, Mary Kay cosmetics, and more.

Tampa Cosmetology Program Chair Stacy Thompson said, “Our students had a great time performing their skills as well as making people feel great. It was a great success for them.”

About SISTUHS
SISTUHS stands for Strength, Initiative, Spirituality, Tenacity, Unity, Health, and Substance.

Headquartered in Tallahassee, Florida, the SISTUHS organization seeks to promote personal and spiritual growth and a positive self-image, particularly among African-American women.

Part of that mission includes seeking guidance from others, learning more about the role African-American women have played and continue to play in developing our nation and other nations, developing local leadership to respond to the community’s needs, providing moral and educational guidance to young women in the community, and fostering unity among people of color.

Ms. Thompson said, “Cosmetology is a talent that can transform the outside of a person, and it can make that person feel good about herself inside, too. Our group was happy and proud to play a role in this very educational and uplifting event and to see the smiles on attendees’ faces after getting a bit of well-deserved pampering, courtesy of our talented students.”
