Remington College’s Little Rock Campus participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on Thursday, August 28, 2014, to raise awareness of and money for research on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, more commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. ALS is a progressive disease of the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement.

Over one week, students in the various programs competed to raise money for the chance to throw a bucket of ice water on either an instructor or a staff member at Little Rock.

Pharmacy Technician students raised the most money, entitling them to the honor of pouring the ice water over the heads of their chosen individuals (pictured L to R):

  • Don Bryant, Lead CJ and MA Instructor
  • Sharon Riggan, Health Sciences Chair
  • Tammi Haley, PT Instructor
  • Rosalie Lampone, Campus President
  • Jennifer Poldo, MA and MAX Program Director (and ALS Challenge Emcee)
  • Sandra Edwards, Externship Coordinator
  • Justin Kinchen, Admissions Representative
  • Gail Pearrow, MA Instructor

“Show Us What You’ve Got!”
As a Campus, Little Rock raised more than $300 toward this worthy cause. They are now issuing a challenge to the home office and all other RC campuses, specifically to the Campus Presidents, Directors of Education, Program Directors, and all other leadership, to join in and participate as well.

More About ALS
Although the cause of ALS is not completely understood, recent years have brought a wealth of new scientific understanding regarding the physiology of this disease. Yet today, there is still no cure or treatment that halts or reverses ALS, although one FDA-approved drug modestly slows its progression, and several other drugs that are being tested in clinical trials may hold promise.
