Promising Start for Occupational Therapy Assistant Program at Heathrow Campus

One of Remington College’s newest programs is our Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) degree program, currently offered at our Heathrow (FL) Campus.1 This hybrid program consists of online courses, in-person labs once a month at the Heathrow Campus, and clinical fieldwork located at select locations.

This program is already making an impact and is expected to grow at a steady rate. Part of that is because the demand for OTA jobs is predicted to grow (by 43% from 2012 through 2022, per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).2 Another reason has to do with our OTA teaching staff, led by National Dean of Occupational and Physical Therapy Studies Dr. Kurt Hubbard, along with Instructor/Academic Fieldwork Coordinator Dr. Anjali K. Parti, Instructor Jeremy Gonzales, and Instructor Karen Jimenez. Yet another reason is because of the focus and dedication of several current OTA students, including inaugural class member Melissa Rosa and member of the second class Sarah Campbell, both of whom are also Remington College employees.

Sarah and Melissa agreed that they were a little unsure of what to expect at first but were pleasantly surprised at how things are progressing. Students in the program are from a variety of locations in the state of Florida, including Spring Hill (north of Tampa) and Milton (near Pensacola).

Instructors’ Perspectives
About the program’s progress thus far, Dr. Hubbard said, “I am excited about how the OTA program is progressing. The innovative hybrid approach to learning consists of a majority of coursework completed online, with real-world, hands-on work in our OTA training facility and during the clinical fieldwork. This approach has really helped facilitate students gaining the knowledge to become excellent future OTAs while giving them the flexibility to continue their lives as parents, employees, and busy individuals.”

Commenting on his approach to making the teaching relevant and practical, Mr. Gonzales said, “For me, it’s about merging the book world with the real world — about enabling my students to thoroughly understand the practical application of what they learn in their classes.”

The OTA instructors and students like to inject humor into their learning, too. In fact, the students have named the skeletal structure in their classroom “Sebastian,” since he is, in a sense, an integral part of the OTA family.

According to Dr. Hubbard, plans for the OTA program going forward include establishing a student association (SOTA) and potential expansion of the program to other campus locations, upon earning the required accrediting body approvals.
