Since its introduction in January 2014 at our Houston South (Webster) Campus, Remington College’s Process Technology (PTEC) associate’s degree program has been gaining momentum. The program is led by Department Chair Ronald (Ron) Gamble, who began at the Campus in December 2013. Mr. Gamble’s experience in the field includes:

  • Four years as a Marine and Pipeline Scheduler/Controller/Trainer at Kinder Morgan Pipeline Terminal, where Mr. Gamble was responsible for on-shift operations and for training the console controllers assigned to carry out Marine and pipeline operations.
  • Twenty years with BP Products North America Incorporated, Texas City, in several capacities including:
    • Air/Water/Waste Environmental Coordinator.
    • Refinery Unit Operations Trainer.
    • Petrochemical Facility Operator/Relief Shift Supervisor.

Currently, 32 active students are enrolled in the PTEC program at Houston South, and the inaugural class is expected to graduate in October 2015. Mr. Gamble’s instructor team consists of five other PTEC instructors: Brian Berger, Don Fitzgerald, David Maddox, John Moody, and David Nash.

According to Mr. Gamble, “The program is progressing at a steady pace. With the support of faculty and campus leadership, my PTEC instructors and I are able to provide the needed lab/classroom materials and give our students the learning environment they need to succeed.”(1)

Some of the topics our PTEC students are studying include the following:

  • Introduction to Process Control, which provides an overview of the field of process operations within the process industry. The course explains the roles and responsibilities of process technicians, the environment in which they work, and the equipment and systems with which they operate.
  • Process Technology Equipment, focusing on the equipment related to the process industry, including its purpose, components, and operation, and the process technician’s role for operating and troubleshooting equipment.
  • Safety, Health, and Environment, addressing the types of industrial hazards, including physical, chemical, ergonomic, and biological hazards.
  • Process Instrumentation I, which introduces the field of instrumentation and covers process variables and the various instruments used to sense, measure, transmit, and control these variables. The course also includes a study of instrumentation drawings and diagrams and a unit on troubleshooting instrumentation.
  • Chemistry, designed to provide a fundamental understanding of the chemical makeup of the world and how that chemistry affects people on a daily basis.
  • Process Electricity, focusing on the essentials of electrical theory as it pertains to the field of industrial electricity.
  • Process Systems, focusing on the interrelationship of process equipment and process systems.

When asked what he and his instructors do to ensure the program’s relevance in today’s world of Process Technology, Mr. Gamble said, “Communication is the essential factor that helps us to make the program relevant for our students. Talking with other PTEC Program Chairs within Remington College, getting valuable information about best practices from them and tips about making the program successful and growing the program are just so valuable, along with attending the North American Process Technology Alliance (NAPTA) meeting, where all NAPTA members share their success stories and common knowledge.”
